The Pedagogy Advantage

The Pedagogy Advantage

No two voices are the same, and no single method works for every voice.

Customized Approach

Most teaching methods originate from the idea, "What works for me will work for you."  Unfortunately, this is just not true.  After all, your voice is as different from your teacher’s as you are.

Understanding the intricacies of vocal production allows for a customized approach to developing your personal voice.  Fortunately, The Pedagogy Advantage provides this needed customization.

Vocal Sciences

The Pedagogy Advantage is a teaching method based upon the vocal sciences, which include areas such as anatomy, physiology and acoustic properties.

This means that your voice may be understood in detail and vocal exercises designed specifically for you to target areas needing growth and development.

Dramatic Results

As you receive customized instruction designed for you and your voice, you will immediately notice results.

By being able to tailor instruction to target areas needing improvement, vocal growth will occur at a faster pace and you will be surprised at the results.

Why I Designed The Pedagogy Advantage

During my first two years as an undergraduate majoring in vocal performance, I encountered a real struggle as a vocalist which impressed upon me the importance of effective teaching.  Each semester I transferred from teacher to teacher because their vocal technique did not work for my voice.  These teachers knew only one technique of singing - their own.  For three semesters, my voice was tied in knots as I searched for a teacher who could understand my individual voice.

In my fourth semester I began studying with Dr. Arden Hopkins.  Dr. Hopkins was an exceptional student of the human voice, the different voice types and the various techniques required for each voice classification.  As I studied with Dr. Hopkins, I began to make progress as a vocalist because he understood my voice and taught me technique that worked with my instrument.  It was a stark contrast from my earlier experiences and demonstrates the importance of understanding the art and science of vocal pedagogy.

About Dr. William Brooke

About Dr. William Brooke

Ray Arbizu, a world-renowned tenor and my first vocal teacher, frequently told me, “If you do not change people for the better as you sing, then you have wasted your time and theirs.”  As a performer, I discovered the truth of his statement.  The most meaningful comments I receive are from audience members who tell me of the inspiration and encouragement they feel as I sing.

It has been eighteen years since I first studied with Ray, and although Ray has passed away, his impact upon my life continues to grow.  I realize now that the real change that Ray imparted to me was the lasting gift of his vocal instruction and mentoring as a teacher and a friend.  As I reflect upon how I can use music to affect people for the better, I realize that it is my influence as a voice teacher that can encourage and inspire others through music.

An accomplished performer, lyric tenor William Brooke has enjoyed performance opportunities both locally and around the world.  Performing with the Utah Festival Opera Company, he appeared in performances of Susannah, South Pacific and Naughty Marietta.  He has also enjoyed solo appearances in England, Austria and St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Italy.  One of his fondest memories is performing O Holy Night in a grand European cathedral accompanied by its magnificent organ for a midnight Christmas Eve mass in London, England.  However, rather singing for 5,000 people or for a friend’s mother suffering from cancer in a Nashville hospital, Dr. Brooke appreciates the influence music has upon each individual and seeks with every performance the opportunity to inspire, encourage and uplift.

Dr. Brooke received a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree in vocal pedagogy from Belmont University and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in vocal performance from the University of Washington.  He has also studied in Graz, Austria with the American Institute of Musical Studies as well as the Goethe-Institut in Dresden, Germany.

Dr. Brooke has a great passion for music.  However, he has also found success in the business world.  He has worked as a financial analyst for an Investment Bank on the East coast as part of a 4-member team managing more than $5 billion in assets.  He was also employed as an Independent Consultant designing financial models and providing legal analysis.  In 2006, he established Derrick Horne Company, a private real estate development group focused upon land development in the Park City, Utah resort area.  A great accomplishment for Mr. Brooke was acceptance to Tulane Law School to study International Humanitarian law.
